“New Spectator” – the art of insight

To ask about the role of the contemporary spectator is only possible based on the spectator paradox, well-known in theater theory – namely, that without a spectator, there is no theater.

What kind of spectator is being formed by the theater-performance scene today, and what is the spectators’ experience with this scene? Are spectators supposed to only watch or is their position to be changed completely into that of participants, and what does that mean? Should they keep the distance or lose it? Should theater be the place of representation or communication? What is a creator trying to achieve if they strive to draw the spectator in and how does the spectator react? With the anniversary year of the festival, we introduce a new discussion format which will not involve evaluation, critique or analysis of performances – although they can be referred to – but rather a lively discussion on the topic of the position of spectator in the contemporary theater and performance art. Let us meet primarily as those who watch and have their own experience with this position. The two discussion blocks do not aim to find a common consensus or to persuade anyone. The goal is to inspire each other.

DUST is a VR art project that aims to transform the way people see and experience contemporary dance through a 5 minutes long immersive virtual reality experience and an interactive website. The project explores the boundaries between the virtual and the real-world experiences and advances research in the fields of participatory performance, human-computer-interaction and VR technologies.

In DUST, the audience uses a Virtual Reality (VR) headset to place themselves in the immediate presence of the dancer and within a unique visual and aural scenario, which has been created by capturing volumetric recordings of dancers and photogrammetric imagery of Rambert’s building. The resulting effect is exhilarating, allowing the audience to experience the work from different perspectives and within the space where the dance is happening. DUST creates an emotional connection between the audience and the dancers, and between the audience and the digitally reconstructed architecture. It is dance as no audience member has ever experienced before. The project is a demonstration of what dance, performance, film and sound could become in the future of VR.

Mainly Love is an intermedia somatic portrait of an autocratic personality, intertwining performance, interactive visual environment and excerpts of interviews with sexually abused women and human predators. Questions posed by Mainly Love attempt to go beyond surface and present individual, and his inner power mechanics which mix fear with humor, aggression. My motivation to create this performance is driven by the need to reconcile with the environment I live in. During research, I kept asking why societies I am part of, are able to tolerate smaller or bigger dictators and even place their hopes in them. I started from the position of the vulnerable – focusing on children and women first. My research led me through the psycho-history to constitutional moments of person(ality) when in micro-societies human beings, their dreams, understandings and approaches are formed, be it of love and compassion or of violence crowned by dreams of glory.

Wirtual discussion in struggle with physical burden: the process of disarmament, of becoming material. The production was created directly for the Kiosk festival based on an open call addressed to five Slovak creators.

How do coordination and confrontation of opinions, searching for a consensus work in a varied group of strangers? How do groups solve problems? The idea is based on the concept of having a group of participants work on the performance format that places real people on stage who then in real time strive to find a solution of a real problem (which they can then immediately apply in practice) or to make a decision or reach a consensus. The emphasis is not on their lives or on what the characters do (because they do not represent any), but rather, in the ideal case, the viewers should witness a social process that operates on human substrate in real time.

How do children look at their lives today? What would they say about themselves and about the people around the world to someone who lives on another planet or in outer space? How would they describe or simply explain what dance is? What questions would they ask? This short documentary is for adults and children who love sci-fi, dance and other adventures.

The documentary was created by elementary school pupils in the first and second grade in cooperation with dancer and choreographer Tereza Ondrová, director Petra Tejnorová, cameramen Marek Bartoš and Dominik Žižka and producer Lucie Račková.

The performance Traces in the memory are inspired by personal experience of performers Maja Danadová and Monika Kováčová – their brothers were diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The primary source material are clinical signs and symptoms of this chronic mental illness. We created an association run on the edge between light and darkness, silence and sound, reflecting the traces of memory, traces in the body.

The mythological tale of the abduction of Europa is a tale of beauty, naivety, desire, omnipotence and the values which are under the influence of many circumstances and years replaced by fear, paranoia, decline and chaos. It is at the same time also a story of contrasts, of the phenomenon of being shut in inside one’s own world which is confronted with the world of nomads, migrants/pilgrims, where the clash of these so different worlds signals the approach of slavery, war, death and bloodshed. The Europe of today becomes a literal fulfillment and realization of the Ancient Greek mythology. The abduction of Europa is transferred from the symbolic level to the level of reality. And it is always people who are behind it all. Or are they?
